I’m Healthy: Do I Really Need to Buy Health Insurance?

Now that the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, mandates that most Americans purchase health insurance, some young and healthy people are questioning whether they need coverage at all. The fact is, even if you think you are healthy, contracting a sudden or serious illness can lead you down the path of financial ruin if you are uninsured. Plus, it’s worth the peace of mind knowing that if something happens to you, you’re covered. Choosing not to have health insurance is a major risk, and here at Winters Insurance Group , it is not something we would recommend doing.

Access to Free Preventative Care and Primary Care

Even the lowest-premium, most catastrophic health insurance plans include a mandate that annual checkups, as well as preventative care such as mammograms, contraceptives, vaccinations, cancer screenings and more must be covered. Physicians recommend getting a routine checkup at least once a year, even if you think you are healthy. Routine checkups can help identify more serious health issues in their early stages before they become a bigger, more expensive issue. If you don’t have health insurance, free services such as these could cost thousands of dollars out-of-pocket.

Another one of the stipulations of the Affordable Care Act is that health insurance policies must provide essential health benefits in 10 categories: preventative and wellness services, outpatient care services, emergency care, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, pediatric care, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drugs, and rehabilitative services. Even young, healthy people can benefit from these services.

It’s More Affordable Than the Alternative

One of the major downsides of being uninsured is that you’re always going to have it in the back of your mind that if something happens to you health-wise, you’re out of luck financially. While premiums have increased a slight amount from year to year, health insurance can be more affordable than you think, thanks to various tax credits and deductions. If you think you cannot afford health insurance, low-income individuals are eligible for tax credits that lower their premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

Of course, with health insurance, you have to pay monthly premiums, but compared to the alternative of thousands of dollars in medical bills, it’s a no-brainer. A three-day stay in the hospital for a routine procedure such as an appendicitis can cost you as much as $30,000. The lowest-premium catastrophic plans have deductibles from $6,000 to $7,000, meaning that if you were to suffer the hypothetical $30,000 hospital stay, you’d only be on the hook for that deductible amount. The health insurance would pay the remainder of the cost. The inability to pay high medical bills is one of the most common reasons that people file for personal bankruptcy, and it can ruin your credit history.
